Homewood School Alumni

As one of the many thousands of alumni who have benefited from a Homewood education over the last 71 years, you are a valued part of our continuing community and a role model to the many students who are following in your footsteps. The friendships you made here are also likely to endure a lifetime.

So whether you can spare time to come and speak to current students, offer work experience to sixth formers, want to arrange a class reunion or simply share your news, we would love to hear from you.

70 Years Young!

Homewood reached this milestone birthday in 2019 and the celebrations included both events and the start of some major projects:-
Homewood Alumni Network & Portal: With the help of educational charity Future First, we’ve launched an online space for former Homewood students – our alumni portal. Please register at the portal here so that we can keep in contact with you; let you know about future events and tell you how you can help current students.
70th Birthday Party: On the morning of Saturday 22 June, 150 alumni and guests, including Ashford & Tenterden MP Damian Green and the Mayor of Tenterden Jean Curteis – herself a former pupil – attended a celebration at the school. The event included an exhibition from the archives and tours of the House (now called the Mansion).  We were planning to hold another major reunion this June, but for obvious reasons this is currently on hold; hopefully we will be able to schedule something later in the year when the current crisis has passed. In the meantime, do keep checking in to this page and the main school website to keep up with our latest news.

Archive70 Project: A major project to  sort and catalogue the school’s archives is well underway. Volunteer students from Year 12 are working with the school’s Business Development Manager and the Secretary of the Tenterden Local History Society to secure the archives for future reference and display. We are also looking for material from the 1980s onwards to fill some gaps in our records. Please get in contact via alumni@homewood.kent.sch.uk if you have any photos or memorabilia that you would be able to lend or donate, or if you would be willing to participate in recording an oral history about your time at the school.

Latest Alumni News

1970-73 Leavers Alumni Reunion: The group planning this reunion have taken the decision to cancel for the time being. In the meantime we are still keen to track down more fellow classmates. If you are interested in a future reunion, and reconnecting with your friends from that time, please contact: d.brind@ntlworld.com

Ron Saxby 1937-2019:  A fascinating personal account of this talented former student’s England football selection and International debut, alongside legend Sir Bobby Charlton, has come to light in our archives.

Following the sad news of the death of Arsenal and England schoolboy footballer Ronald (Ron) Saxby, aged 82 at the end of 2019, volunteers cataloguing Homewood’s archives checked the school’s magazines from 1953 – the year in which Ron received his England and Arsenal call-ups. To their amazement they found a full and detailed account of his first appearances for his country with Sir Bobby and fellow ‘Busby Babe’ Wilf McGuiness. You can read the full account as published in the July 1953 Homewood School Magazine here

Did you go to school with Ron? If so please contact alumni@homewood.kent.sch.uk as we would love to capture your memories for our oral history archive.

Alumni Newsletter:  Our new Alumni Newsletter goes out once a term to our Alumni Network database and includes both school and alumni news, including event dates and requests for alumni to get in touch.  In the latest edition (No5 – Summer 2020) we have news of what’s been happening during lock-down for both students and alumni plus a call for messages to help in reassuring new students about the transition to secondary school or moving into Year 9. We would still like to hear from anyone who took part in our Take Up the Challenge programme over the last 14 years to share their memories. If you have a story for a future newsletter please also contact us on: alumni@homewood.kent.sch.uk.  If you don’t currently receive the newsletter but would like to, you can sign up through our Alumni Network
