The Homewood School Grammar Plus Stream has many advantages over traditional grammar schools. Firstly, students learn in a mixed setting with male and female students learning together. Secondly, at Homewood there are students from all walks of life and all ability levels. This means that our students are better prepared for life after school by being a part of a learning community representative of society as a whole.
Many schools have a ‘top set’, or a ‘grammar set’ but Homewood’s Grammar Plus is different. The Grammar Plus stream provides the unique opportunity for students to study Mandarin Chinese in Year 7 alongside a traditional grammar school curriculum.
Students will opt for their GCSE’s at the end of Year 8 and whilst they may follow a traditional pathway, they have access to the full range of Homewood’s curriculum which is renowned nationally for its breadth. Therefore students can combine a challenging academic curriculum, including Triple Science, Statistics and two languages, with courses which allow them to follow their passions, whether that is in the Performing or Creative Arts, Business or one of the technical subjects such as Catering or Construction. This is simply something grammar schools cannot offer.
Overseen by the Head of Discovery College, the Co-ordinator of the Grammar Plus stream monitors the curriculum provision, working with Skinners Grammar School to ensure the experience for students is of the highest possible standard.
All students at Homewood that applied for University gained a place in 2017. The four hundred student strong Sixth Form is well supported providing students with the skills and confidence they need to successfully apply to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group Universities. The most able Year 9 students have the opportunity to visit and experience top universities as part of their curriculum provision.
Homewood is an International Baccalaureate® World School and accredited for the IB Middle Years Programme, and we are proud to offer IB Career-related Programmes. International Baccalaureate® programmes aim to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.
All routes into the Grammar Plus Stream are dependent on Kent County Council offering Homewood as your chosen secondary school, so it is important that you place Homewood as your secondary school of choice. Places will be confirmed shortly after national offer day 1st March 2018.
